How far now? How things? Where do you work now? Can I give you my CV? Can you talk to your boss for me?
These are just a few of the questions that people working in the corporate world of Nigeria have come to accept as normal and expected in their daily interactions with friends and family members most of whom are unemployed and desperately in need of a job.
While superficially there is nothing wrong in corporate networking to uncover employment opportunities, close inspection of these situations reveals the alarming trend that a lot of Nigerians are not merely networking for opportunity but are really looking for someone with the right connections and who has no scruples in leveraging this position to hand them a job on a gold platter.
It is important to make a clear distinction between these two cases. Searching for a job and searching for someone who knows someone else who can give anybody a job are two very different things. In the case of the former, direct efforts are made to secure the job and in most cases it involves grooming ones skills and preparing a resume so one can be competitively positioned. However, in the case of the latter, people generally feel that If I can find someone high enough in the organization chain, little effort is needed to earn that position.
This, from my own point of view is one of the reasons why a lot of highly skilled Nigerians are still unemployed. Sometimes, those searching for connections find the connections they’ve been searching for only for everything to fall apart because of concerns about if they can really do the job. Some people need to realize that if everyone in Exxon Mobil was recruited based on nepotism or as t is popularly called “man know man”, then the performance and efficiency of the company would have been compromised.
The young, skilled and ambitious Nigerian who needs a job is advised to spend more time getting ready for that interview versus all that time searching for connections. I know a friend who had various versions of his resume pasted on the walls of his flat. He had several post-it of likely interview questions with already made answers. Anytime he got a call from an unidentified number, he would make sure he was standing next to his wall when he picked up the call. In addition to that, he had several accounts on test taking sites where he regularly practiced to improve his accuracy and speed. His story ended, and began with five simultaneous job offers.
So my question to the young and ambitious Justfrom5k.com users is; are you “REALLY” searching for a job? or are you actually searching for connections?
