A lot of times when I pitch the idea of Justfrom5k to people, the first thing that comes to their mind is why 5k?
Don’t you think that you are limiting yourself by saying 5k?
What happens when people want to bid below 5K? Are you saying they cannot?
Why not jobsfrom5k?
These are just some of the questions that I am immediately bombarded with. While I completely agree that these questions are valid and reasonable, they are all based on one fundamental assumption. This assumption is that the “5K” stands for N5000 in Nigerian parlance.
Yes it is true that I when I chose the name 5K I was thinking along the lines of N5000, but now it’s not just “Naira”, it could be any currency, This means It could be $5000, 5000Eur or 5000 CFA. If one assumes that it is $5000, that will mean that they are allowed to bid above N1, 000,000 (assuming an exchange rate of $1 = N200). On the other hand if one is to assume that it is 5000 CFA, this will mean he can bid from N1250 ( assuming an exchange rate of N1 = 4CFA).
So please do not get hung up on 5k part of the name. Just place your bids and allow the errand creator decide if he/she wants to make you the winner.
Now back to the real reason why I decided to not change the name.
The reason why I chose the name Justfrom5k is just because it sits well with my gut. The first time I thought about this idea was in 2011 and from that first time the name that came straight to my mind was Justfrom5k. I have tried to change the name several times due to the opinions of people, however whatever new name I choose, it just never just sits well with me.
At the end of the day when it comes to naming, I guess I am just like Richard Hendriks when he chose the name Pied Piper. Oh if you are wondering who Richard Hendriks is, check out the sitcom, Silicon Valley.
